1998 was the year of the home run and largely credited as the season that brought baseball back from the 1994 labor stoppage. The season was dominated by the chase for Roger Maris' home run record. Mark McGwire and Ken Griffey, Jr., started hot and Sammy Sosa joined the chase with a record 20 home runs in the month of June. McGwire and Sosa both passed Maris in September while Griffey, Jr., became the third player to hit 50 homers in back-to-back seasons. 1998 would be the first time in MLB history that four players (Greg Vaughn was the fourth) would hit at least 50 home runs in the same season.

The pitchers were not to be outdone as rookie Kerry Wood struck out 20 batters versus the Astros in a 2-0 win, the Braves became the first team since 1930 to have five 15-game winners, Tom Gordon of the Red Sox converted 42 consecutive save opportunities, Dennis Eckersley set the all-time record for appearances by a pitcher, and Trevor Hoffman tied the NL record for saves (53).

Two new teams--Arizona and Tampa Bay--joined the MLB to bring the total number of teams to 30 with the Brewers moving from the AL to the NL.
